Here is how a pressure cooker works its magic. The cover or lid locks in place creating a closed system at a standard 15 pounds of pressure. At this pressure water boils at 257 degrees F instead of the usual 212 degrees F. The higher temperature cooks the food faster. About three times faster than regular stove top cooking methods. Small to medium-sized potatoes cook in five minutes, and a whole "roast" chicken dinner cooks in only twenty minutes. All foods, vegetables in particular, keep their color and their flavor. Nutrients stay trapped in the pot instead of dissipating in a cloud of steam.

You want heat resistant double handles, one on each side of the pot, in every case. A 6 quart pressure cooker is minimum family size. Go larger if you will use it as a canner.

You are better off sticking with a name brand manufacturer even when price is your primary consideration. Quality control is likely to be better but more importantly you want to be able to get replacement parts when you need them five or ten years from now. Valves get lost. Gaskets wear out or get damaged. A loose fitting lid doesn't affect your stock pot but it will put your pressure cooker out of business.

Many models come with useful accessories like racks, trivets or vegetable steamers which keep food from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Most chefs brown meats before attaching the lid so sticking does occur. You may still want to avoid nonstick interiors, however. The occasional inconvenience of a little extra cleaning far outweighs the risk of a pitted or peeling interior coating. Nonstick interiors are less of a potential problem with electric pressure cookers.

Cuisinart makes a programmable electric pressure cooker worth considering. Priced between the Presto and the Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker its push-button controls and digital display make an attractive package. The Cuisnart can be programmed for high or low pressure cooking, browning, simmering, sauteing or warming. And you got to admit that an electronic thermostat is more foolproof than setting a stovetop control to a precise position. You do give up some flexibility, however, because you can't open the lid until the cooker says you can. With the stove top models you can instantly drop the pressure and open the lid by putting the unit under cold water.

Being the camp cook on an outdoor camping trip can be a lot of work. The camping cookware is usually heavy cast iron, and can include: iron grills, a Dutch oven, heavy cast iron skillets, and the campfire tools you use for cooking your campfire meals. This can add-up to a lot of bilk and weight. But you can make the job easier with some forethought and planning. These campfire cooking tips can lighten the load for the camp cook.

One of the biggest jobs for the camp cook, is getting the food and gear into camp, and then repacking it again when you're done. Organizing your camp kitchen and cooking your favorite campfire recipes can be fun, you get to show-off your ingenuity and talent. Even clean-up can be an enjoyable time with your camping buddies who help with the job. But nobody likes hauling a lot of heavy cast iron cookware in and out of camp. Take a look at your camping cookware sets, what will you really need?

Your camp cookware is probably the heavy stuff...cast iron cookware. The griddle and skillet, the heavy cast iron Dutch oven, and the assorted campfire tools you use, the iron cooking tripod, a campfire grill, and the folding camp tables... There must be a better way!

There is a better way, but first you need to think about what you will need. What is the menu for your camp food? What are the campfire recipes and meals you want to cook? Does your dinner camp recipe need two pots? If so, why take three? If you will be using a campfire ring that includes a grill, you won't need to bring your own cast iron grill. Think about these questions and think about what pieces of camp cookware you really need. After all cast iron cookware is heavy, don't take more than you need.

Think of being a bare-essentials campfire cook, only take the minimum number of cookware pieces needed to get the job done. If a recipe calls for a skillet, maybe you can use the griddle, the Dutch oven pot or even the Dutch oven lid for small quick jobs Perhaps you can leave the heavy cast iron skillet home. The Dutch oven pot can also be used in place of pots and pans if you plan your campfire recipes to be casseroles or 1-pot campfire meals. You may be able to reduce your needs to one small pan that would fit inside the Dutch oven. Those extra pots and pans can stay home too.

Depending on your experience, you may not need to take a heavy cooking tripod or any campfire grills. You can lash together some sturdy tree limbs you find at the campsite for a tripod, and use cast iron griddles as campfire grills.

What about all those campfire cooking utensils? If you are a "cooking mechanic" and need dozens of specific campfire tools, that's your decision, but many experienced campfire cooks have discovered they only need: a good camping knife, a large serving spoon, and a spatula. And if you choose ones that have short handles they will pack inside the Dutch oven.

Now, review your choices and see what you have. The small pan, your leather camp gloves and the short-handled utensils should fit inside the cast iron Dutch oven. Now you have just the cast iron griddles and the Dutch oven to carry. (just pack your camping cast iron cookware, not the fancy enameled cast iron cookware you see in the kitchen)

And for cups, plates, and silverware, just tell your campers to bring their own coffee cups and eating utensils. Every thing else will be disposable paper stuff. This makes your job much easier with less to pack and haul in and out of camp.

If this is too minimalist for your menus of camp meals, or the campfire recipes, just make whatever adjustments are required, but still, only bring what you need. Keep these tips in mind when you put together your camping gear and campfire cookware and you will have a lot less to carry in and out of camp, leaving you more time to enjoy the outdoor camping activities you came for in the first place.

Healthy eating is a way of life that you have to get used to. It's hard to eat healthy if the food that you need is inconvenient to get. It's important to have nutrient dense foods ready to cook, so eating a nutritious meal is as easy as driving through the fast food line.

If this is the first time that you have filled your pantry with healthy foods, you may need a course in Grocery Shopping 101 in order to beat back the temptations that food manufacturers have strategically placed in your path.

Before leaving home, make a grocery list. But before you make a grocery list, make the upcoming week's meal plan. Developing your meal plan doesn't have to be difficult, but consider some of the foods that are already in your cupboard to make things easier and less expensive. Once you've got your meals planned out for the week, inventory the ingredients that you will need for each dish and notate the ones that you will need to purchase. After you have established what you need, make the grocery list, and list the food in order of the grocery store layout. This way you won't go haphazardly down aisles that you don't need to search.

Try to avoid the aisles with cookies and processed foods, such as sugary cereals. Many of these aisles are in the center of the grocery store, with the fresh items at each end of the store. Look for whole grains near the rice and pasta. Read labels to look for 100% whole-wheat to be sure you are getting whole grain products. Take some time to find the healthier foods rather than going straight for your old reliables.

Fresh vegetables and fruits should make up the largest part of your grocery list. I recommend that you eat at least seven or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Choose seasonal produce and get a variety, especially if you are feeding a family.

Proteins and meats should consist of mostly fish, poultry and lean meats. Eggs, nuts, seeds and legumes should be part of your list.

Choose low-fat dairy products like milk, yogurt and cheese. Try soymilk or rice-milk for tasty alternatives to whole milk. Don't forget, many fruits and vegetables are good sources of calcium like avocadoes for instance.

Beverages should be kept simple. Water, low-fat milk, juices and herbal teas are all good choices. If you opt for soft drinks, choose diet sodas and soft drinks to avoid extra sugar.

Take caution when buying dressings, cooking oils and condiments. They can be sneaky sources of refined sugars and high in fat and calories. Read labels to choose dressings made with healthy oils such as olive oil and canola oil.

Frozen vegetables are convenient and nutritious. If you are cooking for one, there are many single-serving frozen entrees that cook up in minutes. These make it easy to have a variety of vegetables, without having to throw any of it away. If you do have more than you can consume, consider saving your left over veggies to add to a soup for another meal.

Pasta Maker Can Make More Than Just Pasta

After burning out my last two pasta makers, I finally received a new pasta maker for Christmas this year. I am not sure if the pasta maker was for me or if the family simply wanted more fresh pasta to eat.

Either way, I was excited about my gift and the many ways to use my pasta roller. The first thing I did was make my linguine noodle with olive oil, butter and Parmesan. We gobbled that up very quickly.

In our family we are on a pretty good food budget that is $100 a week to feed a family of four. The pasta maker will fit right in this budget when I start cranking out the gourmet food. One great item I can make with a pasta maker is ravioli. Ravioli is similar to the slow cooker when it comes to left overs. Take whatever left overs yo have from your fridge mince it nice and fine, add some seasoning and stuff the pasta dough that you just made.

The flavor will be incredible and never the same taste twice. The cost of the high quality pasta will be approximately $0.25.

The pasta maker should be given a more appropriate name as this tool can do many things. With my last pasta maker I began making super thin unleavened bread. This became a fantastic way to add the luxury you see in quality restaurants for pennies.

In the winter season we eat a lot of soup. This lead to the consumption of a substantial amount of saltines with the soup. The problem for us is the high sodium content in saltines and any other cracker. I solved this problem by learning how to make cracker dough and create my own crackers. The diversity of crackers in enormous when you can make your own. I like to make cheese crackers so I have used regular cheddar, sharp cheddar, pepper jack, blue cheese and feta to make them.

I have topped crackers with a variety of sesame seeds. The first time I put the seeds in the dough and tried to roll the dough but the seed would not go through the rollers. Now I put hard seeds on the dough after I have rolled it.

For my vegetable crackers, I will cook a vegetable until it is soft, then I will puree and strain as much liquid out of the puree as possible. The puree is then added to my liquid that I will use to make cracker dough. They are always very tasty.

I also substitute a variety of liquids for my wet ingredient, the most popular liquid I will use for my pasta maker to make crackers is beer.

KitchenAid is a large appliance manufacturer. They sell everything from dishwashers and washing machines to toasters. In fact they are one of the largest and most well known of appliance manufacturers in the US. KitchenAid has a name for being a low cost manufacturer and they usually bring out products that are somewhere at the bottom of the price spectrum. This does not mean that they do not have any expensive models, just that they concentrate at the lower end of the market.

When it comes to toasters, KitchenAid has a number of models in its line up. You get every combination from a two slice, plasticky, semi-automatic model to a fully automatic, stainless steel model. They have more than 15 models and depending on your budget you can pretty much get whatever you are inclined towards getting. A couple of their most selling models are reviewed here.

KMTT200SS 2 slice

This model is not their cheapest one, but is a very good deal. At around $70 it is almost $20 or $30 more than the other low cost ones that you can find in the market. The difference is that at this price you get a stainless steel finished product which means that it will last you much longer than the plastic things that you get at around $40 or $50. Any comparable models cost in the region of $120 which means that this model is almost a throw away in terms of price which is why it is so popular.

KMT423CU 4 slice

This model is their ordinary silver finished plastic model but at nearly $100 is a little on the expensive side. Although there are a number of other manufacturers who give you a 4 slice toaster at half the price, they will all be the semi-automatic which means that you will have to push the lever down. This model is however fully automatic, which means that all you do is pop in the bread; it goes down, and comes back up softly when it is done. You also get a number of temperature settings with individual controls so that you can have one setting for two slices and a totally different set of settings for another set that is getting done right by the side. If you want one like this from another brand you will have to shell out nearly twice this amount which is why this comes second in their list.

KMTT400SS 4 slice

This is just another 200SS that has been added on to the one. It even looks just like two 200SS that has been stuck together as one. Unfortunately it also costs more than twice what the 200SS costs which means that unless you are really particular about the stainless steel cover, it is better to go with the previous model.

If you have ever researched purchasing a single serve coffee maker you no doubt have discovered the Keurig line of coffee makers. These machines are a wonderful addition to any kitchen and provide a large selection of single cup coffee blends and flavors.

Keurig coffee makers range from the Keurig B31 Mini Plus Brewer to the Keurig Special Edition B60 Gourmet Single Serve Coffee Maker to the top of the line Keruig Platinum Brewing System. While these are great machines you will soon discover that there are a number of complaints by consumers posted on the internet.

The most common complaint is that the machine simply quits working after some period of time. For example, reviews on Amazon show that about 10% of purchasers have complaints about the units they received while the remainder of the reviews is very positive, giving the machines an overall satisfaction rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

It appears that most of these disgruntled consumers return their unit for replacement, and in some cases the replacement works no better. However, it appears that the problem may be related more to the quality of tap water used than any other factor.

If you use well water it will be full of a variety of minerals including calcium which can build up within the thin water lines and filter of the Keurig coffee maker. While discouraging the problem can be fixed quite easily, and it may be better to use bottled water which has most of those minerals removed.

If your Keurig coffee maker quits here is how to descale and clean the machine:

Pour undiluted white vinegar into the brewer's reservoir to the fill level mark;
Place a coffee cup on the drip tray;
Make sure the lid is closed and then run a brew cycle;
Pour the contents of the coffee cup back into the water reservoir, run a second brew cycle - HOWEVER, this time turn the machine off as soon as it begins dispensing the liquid into the coffee cup!
Let the brewer stand for 30 minutes after disposing of the contents of the coffee cup before continuing;
Fill the water reservoir with distilled water and then run another brew cycle into a coffee cup throwing the contents of the coffee cup away;
Repeat the previous step until the reservoir is empty.

Once you have accomplished the above you may find that there is a nasty taste to your coffee left behind by the vinegar. In that case you will need to run multiple brew cycles with just distilled water before resuming use of your coffee maker.

In addition to these problems there have been some reports of leaking from the Keurig brewer water reservoir. This is generally caused by a blockage in the filter or water lines which does not allow the water to flow through the coffee maker and into your cup.

Again, the best solution is to thoroughly clean the machine until the leak is stopped and the brewer works properly. As with all mechanical devices your Keurig coffee machine requires periodic maintenance in order to make sure it continues to work properly.

The function of a bed could be solved with a mattress on the floor, and in many countries in the world this would be regarded as a luxury. Any culture capable of reading this has progressed from this stage in evolution, although it would be wonderful to eradicate poverty. People want more than a plain bed frame; they want a centrepiece of the room, probably the room in the house where they spend most time, albeit asleep. For many generations, the four-poster bed has been revered as the elite bed, many believing it to be the ultimate possession. Four-poster beds with or without canopies made in wood or metal are still extremely popular, with history playing an important part in how we feel about it.

There are two fields of thought relating to the four-poster bed, that of the British, and the Americans. In the U.K. (and Europe) we consider a four-poster bed to be a bed with four posts, cornice, high headboard and roof, but in the States, I understand this would be called a four-poster canopy bed. In the U.S. a four-poster bed is exactly that, a bed with four posts, no cornice, no roof, just four posts. The tall, elongated posts stand like spires above the rest of the bed, often ending in finials. For obvious reasons, this style is frequently called a pencil bed. We have seen and made a variety of posts for these beds, either slender to give it a Shaker feel, or chunky for a country flavour. The posts can be turned round, left square, but tapering with some shaped features, or octagonal. They can have twists, flutes (dished hollows), or reeds (raised beads), or even inlayed wood down the length of the post. The list for the traditional looking posts is long enough, but if you start to get away from the past, and what's been done before, then a whole new world can open up, it's just a question of what the public will tolerate.

Traditional British four-poster or canopy beds had turned, reeded, fluted or twisted posts, indeed, many were made more ornate with extensive carving added to them. In years gone by, only wealthy noblemen would own such a bed and when he died one of the treasures was the four-poster bed.
It's amazing just how many people love or always wanted a four-poster bed with a full canopy, many feeling it an ambition or dream fulfilled when they finally own one. You will hear comments like, 'I saw one once,' or 'I slept in one, and I've always wanted one ever since.' Many consider the four-poster to be extremely romantic, but it may all come back to fairy tails, and the days of fair maidens, white horses and shiny knights, or were they white knights. Tradition has instilled into many of us to aspire to own a four-poster bed, antique if possible. Failing that, then reproduction is a good alternative, as it is often not as costly, and when you commission a piece of furniture, you get what you want. People at furniture auctions either seem to compromise their wish or wait till next time, whereas asking a furniture maker for something you can have any size, style, wood, colour or carving that you wish.

The more bed you have, the more you can personalise it, and by the time it is complete, you would rarely find two the same. So the four-poster bed is ideal, with a choice of several wood, post and panel designs, carving, finished colour (including paint), and the variety in size and height, four posters are very individual. If you add to that the variety of fabrics, patterns and colours available from which drapes can be made, there is no end to the possibilities. It is not just the look of the bed that is important, but also the feel. The sheets are a critical factor in feeling the quality of your bed, and as you spend a third if your life there, you may as well make it comfortable, so buy good quality linen.

From heavy tapestries draped over deeply carved posts, with linenfold panels and a fully enclosed oak roof, to light silks and lacy dressing an American style pencil bed with no footboard, fine rope twists ending in a finial rather like that of a pawn or bishop in a chess set, the four-poster bed will survive for many more centuries. It is up to us to start looking into the future, moving with the times, developing new styles, dragging the bed by its' posts into the 21st Century, to be held in esteem as the ultimate dream for another 600 years.

My family and friends went out for pizza this evening. The closest place was a local pizzeria that has decent pizza. Since pizza is my favorite meal to cook, it's rare that I buy pizza at a restaurant.

There were only four of us and we were all hungry so we ordered an extra large pizza. That's about an 18 inch pizza. The order was half vegetarian and half pepperoni. We also ordered 3 soft drinks and one glass of wine.

When I got the bill for $45.00, I almost had a heart attack! Can this be a mistake? I've never paid $45.00 for one pizza and some drinks. Maybe I need to get out more, but this to me was outrageous!

After getting home and calculating what it would cost to make a pizza, I came up with a little under $2.00. Wow! That's the kind of mark-up I would like in my business. However, I doubt if I would go back and get another pizza at that joint.

In today's difficult economic times most families can save money by making pizza at home. The recipe is very simple and the ingredients are readily available in any grocery store. Once you learn a few pizza making tricks your pizza can taste like you bought it at your favorite pizza restaurant.

When shopping for beef, it's harder to see the quality in a brisket than it is to see the quality in a steak. But if you know how steaks are graded, you'll have an easier time selecting your next brisket. With beef, safety inspection by the USDA is mandatory, but grading is optional. The top three grades are prime, choice and select. Usually only prime and choice are graded and marked at the retail level. Prime is usually reserved for the nicer restaurants but can be found occasionally in upscale meat stores. Choice is the grade found in most grocery stores and discount warehouses. Select is a lot leaner cut of beef and it is what is sold in the big discount retail grocery stores. "No roll" beef is beef that has not been graded by the USDA. Automatic ice cream makers are becoming a popular household appliance. Making this delicious frozen treat at home is so much easier for us today than for those even a generation ago. In this article I will describe the 3 basic types of ice cream makers that are available.

Ice cream has been around for a couple centuries, at first it was primarily reserved for the elite because it was difficult to make. In the summer months when a frozen dessert was desired, the supply of ice was limited. Ice had to be collected in the winter and stored in an ice house, usually packed in saw dust to keep the blocks from freezing together. In the mid 1800's a home ice cream machine was invented. It consisted of a metal cylinder to hold the ingredients, a dasher (paddle) attached to a crank handle was inserted into the cylinder and the cylinder was inserted in a wooden bucket. Ice and rock salt were added to the bucket in layers. The salt lowered the melting temperature of the ice which resulted in the cylinder full of cream and other ingredients to be cooled to below the freezing point of the cream. The handle needed to be turned continuously to keep the mixture from freezing solid and to create a creamy texture.

This method of making ice cream is still used today and is the first type of frozen dessert maker I will discuss. Today's automatic version replaces the hand crank with an electric motor that does the hard work of continuously stirring the cream mixture. Of course you can still buy the hand crank models and making ice cream by hand can be a fun activity on a hot summer day. These electric dessert makers are available in the under $50 range for a four quart model with a plastic bucket. A larger one or one with a traditional wooden bucket will cost more.

The next type of automatic ice cream maker does not use ice and salt to get a freezing temperature. Instead they use a special double walled bowl (also referred to as a cylinder, tub or canister) This bowl is filled with freezer gel; similar to those reusable freezer gel packs. The gel freezes and melts slowly allowing it to keep things cold for a while. The trick to using this type of ice cream maker is to freeze the gel-filled bowl for 12-24 hours in a cold freezer. When it is time to make the frozen dessert, the frozen bowl is placed in the ice cream maker, the ingredients (pre-chilled) are added, a dasher inserted and the motor mixes the cream as it begins to freeze. These machines can also be used to make frozen yogurt, sorbet, gelato and even frozen drinks like Margaritas. The gel type automatic ice cream makers are the most popular because they are easy to use and clean up afterward. They are also affordable with 1 to 1.5 qt. models available for under $50. Larger models are available in the $50-$100 range.

The third type of automatic ice cream makers are those with a built in compressor that acts as a mini freezer. To use you turn it on and add the ingredients. The machine maintains the correct temperature and continually mixes the ice cream. These models are more expensive than the freezer-gel models and cost in the $200 and up range. The advantage to these is you can make multiple batches of frozen desserts in a single day without needing to freeze multiple freezer-gel bowls.

But what are the effects relating to fitness? If that grande-no-foam-double-whipped-extra-shot-no-fat latte gives us the get-up-and-go to start our day at work, will it do the same if we're headed to the gym?

Physiological Effects

The main ingredient in coffee that gives us that jolt is caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant. Caffeine is found naturally in coffee beans, tea leaves, and chocolate, and is a popular added ingredient in carbonated beverages and some over-the-counter medications such as cold remedies, diuretics, aspirin, and weight control aids. It is estimated that in the U.S., 75% of caffeine intake comes from coffee.

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system by blocking adenosine, a neurotransmitter that normally causes a calming effect in the body. The resulting neural stimulation due to this blockage causes the adrenal glands to release adrenaline, the "fight or flight" hormone. Your heart rate increases, your pupils dilate, your muscles tighten up, and glucose is released into your blood stream for extra energy. Voila... you now have the caffeine buzz.

But wait...we're not done yet. Caffeine also increases dopamine. Dopamine activates the pleasure in parts of the brain. It has been suspected that this also contributes to caffeine addiction.

Physiologically, caffeine makes us you feel alert, pumps adrenaline to give you energy and changes dopamine production to make you feel good. Another espresso, anyone?

Ergogenic Effects of Caffeine to Performance

In addition to various psychological and physiological benefits, numerous studies have documented caffeine's ergogenic effect on athletic performance, particularly in regard to endurance. Studies show that caffeine ingestion prior to exercising extended endurance in moderately strenuous aerobic activity. Other studies researching caffeine consumption on elite distance runners and distance swimmers show increased performance times following caffeine consumption.

Despite effects on endurance, caffeine produced no effect on maximal muscular force in a study measuring voluntary and electrically stimulated muscle actions. However, the same study did show findings that suggest caffeine has an ergogenic effect on muscle during repetitive, low frequency stimulation.

Caffeine's positive performance-enhancing effects have been well documented. So much so that the International Olympic Committee placed a ban leading to disqualification for an athlete with urinary limits exceeding 12 mg/mL. Roughly 600 to 800mg of caffeine, or 4 to 7 cups of coffee, consumed over a 30-minute period would be enough to exceed this level and cause disqualification. The National Collegiate Athletic Association has a similar limit, set at 15 mg/mL.

Coffee: A Pre-Workout Drink?

Before you make Starbucks part of your pre-workout warm-up in order to harness the effects of caffeine, be aware that simply downing a grande may not give you similar benefits found in these studies. A recent Canadian study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology compared the effect of coffee and caffeine on run time to exhaustion. A group of nine men took part in five trials. Sixty minutes before each run, the men took one of the following:

A placebo

Caffeine capsules

De-caffeinated coffee with caffeine added

Regular coffee

Performance times were up to 10 times longer in subjects using the caffeine capsules, with no differences in times among the other trials. Since the level of caffeine absorption was similar during the caffeine trials, researchers concluded something in the coffee itself that interferes with caffeine's performance-enhancing effects. This makes sense considering that there are literally hundreds of compounds dissolved when coffee beans are roasted, ground and extracted. Results of this research suggest that if benefits of caffeine on endurance times are desired, caffeine capsules work better than coffee.

Caffeine and Creatine Supplementation

Although caffeine has been shown to increase endurance time, further research shows it may actually blunt the effect of creatine, a popular and well-researched compound known for its consistent ergogenic effects. In a study evaluating the effect of pre-exercise caffeine ingestion on both creatine stores and high-intensity exercise performance, caffeine totally counteracted any effects of creatine supplementation. It was suggested that individuals who creatine load should refrain from caffeine-containing foods and beverages if positive effects are desired.

The Downside of Caffeine

Despite coffee/caffeine's positive effects on psychological states and performance, there are numerous documented risks that must considered when consuming caffeine, whether for performance-enhancing effects or simply as a part of daily dietary consumption.

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and can produce restlessness, headaches, and irritability. Caffeine also elevates your heart rate and blood pressure. Over the long-term as your body gets used to caffeine, it requires higher amounts to get the same effects. Certainly, having your body in a state of hormonal emergency all day long isn't very healthy.

Caffeine is also a diuretic and causes a loss of fluid, which then leads to a dehydrating effect. This is obviously not conducive to fitness activities such as resistance training, as fluid is needed for the transfer of nutrients to facilitate muscular growth. It is also important when considering the further loss of fluid while exercising in hot environments.

Perhaps the most important long-term problem is the effect of caffeine on sleep. The half-life of caffeine in the body is about 6 hours. If you drink a big cup of coffee with 200 mg of caffeine at 4PM, at 10PM you still have about 100mg in your body. By 4AM, you still have 50mg floating in your system. Even though you may be able to sleep, you may not be able to obtain the restful benefits of deep sleep. What's worse, the cycle continues as you may use more and more caffeine in hopes of counteracting this deficit.

Caffeinated Conclusions...

Though caffeine has some benefits in relation to exercise performance, risks have been documented. Most problems seem evident with very high consumption. The American Heart Association says that moderate coffee drinking (one or two cups per day) does not seem to be harmful for most people. As with everything else, moderation is the key to healthy caffeine consumption. Further research is needed to clearly determine whether the performance-enhancing benefits of caffeine outweigh the potential risks.

Having pondered buying a highend, expensive blender (Blendtec, Vitamix,etc) I just could not justify the price for what I needed. We drink a few smoothies each week and I make my own energy bars (dates, nuts, fruit, etc). So I was looking for a machine to accomplish these types of things.

I am happy with my purchase, the only design fearture I do not care for:

1. the black collar is a nuisance and I do not use it since it is optional, but it is suppose to help stabalize the jar when you set it on the counter
2. the lid does not fit as snug as my old Oster, so if you are blending at capacity-hold the top down just in case.
